Discover 5 key benefits of Fisetin for anti-ageing and improved cellular health

For decades, scientists have searched for compounds that can slow degenerative ageing processes.

Fisetin is rapidly gaining global recognition as a naturally occurring powerhouse in the world of health and longevity. Even famous Dr. David Sinclair takes it daily.

This remarkable compound stands out for its senolytic properties – the ability to selectively target and eliminate senescent cells that contribute to ageing.

It’s a plant flavonoid that has been shown to increase lifespan of rodents by 10%. This is the equivalent of 75 human years.

Fisetin benefits

Fisetin acts as a potent antioxidant, combats inflammation, and, most notably, exhibits senolytic properties.

This means Fisetin can selectively target and clear senescent cells – ageing cells that have stopped dividing and contribute to age-related decline and diseases.

Senescent cells are often called Zombie cells, because they are no longer dividing or functioning properly, but still remain metabolically active.

Its ability to influence cellular ageing processes positions Fisetin at the forefront of longevity research, making it a subject of considerable interest for scientists exploring natural interventions for healthy ageing.

How does Fisetin work?

The comprehensive benefits of Fisetin span several aspects of health and wellbeing.

1. Fisetin as a senolytic compound

Fisetin functions as a senolytic by selectively targeting and eliminating senescent cells. These are cells that have ceased dividing and contribute to ageing and age-related diseases.

Senescent cells accumulate in tissues over time, secreting harmful inflammatory factors and enzymes that degrade tissue function. The accumulation of senescent cells is a hallmark of ageing, known as cellular senescence.

Studies suggest that Fisetin reduces cellular senescence through the induction of apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in senescent cells, whilst sparing healthy cells. In a nutshell, Fisetin gets rid of the zombie cells whilst protecting the healthy ones.

This selective action of Fisetin not only promotes a healthier cellular environment, but also enhances overall tissue function and longevity.

2. Fisetin as an anti-inflammatory

Fisetin exerts anti-inflammatory effects by modulating various signalling pathways that are involved in the inflammatory response.

It inhibits the activity of certain proteins, reducing inflammation at the molecular level.

Fisetin also downregulates the production of pro-inflammatory molecules, which play significant roles in chronic inflammation.

By suppressing these inflammatory mediators, Fisetin can mitigate the effects of chronic inflammation, which is a root cause of many age-related diseases. In fact, chronic inflammation is another of the 12 hallmarks of ageing.

Its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier also suggests potential benefits in neuroinflammatory conditions, offering a protective effect against neurodegeneration.

3. Fisetin as an antioxidant

As an antioxidant, Fisetin scavenges free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress and damage to cells.

It enhances the body’s endogenous antioxidant defences, boosting the activity of enzymes like superoxide dismutase and catalase.

Fisetin’s ability to reduce oxidative stress is linked to its chemical structure, which allows it to donate electrons to neutralise free radicals effectively.

This antioxidant action contributes to the protection of cells from DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, and protein degradation, which are common in ageing.

Fisetin’s role in maintaining cellular redox balance is crucial in preventing the onset of various oxidative stress-related diseases, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders.

4. Fisetin in fighting cancer

Fisetin has demonstrated potential in combatting cancer by inducing apoptosis in cancer cells, a process that facilitates the removal of tumour cells.

Its anti-inflammatory properties play a crucial role in reducing compounds that contribute to chronic inflammation and cancer progression.

In colorectal cancer patients, Fisetin has been observed to lower levels of pro-inflammatory mediators.

Fisetin enhances autophagy, the cellular housekeeping mechanism that maintains normal cell function. This enhanced autophagy can inhibit the survival of cancer cells.

It contributes to the prevention of angiogenesis in cancer, thereby starving tumour cells of essential nutrients like oxygen and glucose.

Fisetin helps in preventing oxidative damage, which is a significant factor in DNA mutations and the development of cancer.

Fisetin may also inhibit cancer cell migration and metastasis, potentially limiting the spread of cancer to different parts of the body.

5. Fisetin in preventing obesity and diabetes

Fisetin acts as a metabolic control switch, reducing fat cell accumulation and suppressing the activation of mTOR, a protein linked to weight gain.

In animal studies, Fisetin has shown efficacy in preventing weight gain and the accumulation of harmful white fat tissue in subjects on a high-fat diet.

It also combats fat accumulation in the liver, a common issue in metabolic diseases, which can compromise liver function and lead to fatty liver disease.

Fisetin presents potential benefits for individuals suffering from type II diabetes, as evidenced in rodent models, where it lowered body weight and improved glucose control.

In diabetic mice, Fisetin significantly reduced the severity of complications, such as slowing the progression of cataracts, preventing kidney damage, and enhancing kidney function.

A human trial is currently underway to explore Fisetin’s ability to protect kidney function, especially in diabetes patients, highlighting its promising role in managing and potentially preventing diabetes-related complications.

Bioavailability of Fisetin

The issue with Fisetin is that it is converted into an inactive form in the digestive tract. Thus, it is not well-absorbed in our bloodstream.

Scientists have recently been able to develop a low-cost way to increase the bioavailability up to 25x higher, allowing Fisetin to be distributed throughout our body.

Taking Fisetin and Quercetin together

Combining Fisetin and Quercetin may amplify their health benefits due to their synergistic effects. Which one is better?

Quercetin, another flavonoid with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, complements Fisetin’s senolytic activity.

Together, they could potentially enhance cellular health and longevity more effectively than when taken separately.

This combination could lead to a more robust defence against oxidative stress and inflammation, both key factors in ageing and chronic diseases.
