What is collagen?

Collagen is a complex protein, consisting of 19 out of the 21 amino acids common to all life forms. The main amino acids are prolineglycine, and hydroxyproline – together forming fibril-like structures with the help of Vitamin C, Zinc, Copper and Manganese. Collagen fibrils are what allow the shape of connective tissues to be defined and maintained.

Types of collagen 

The main sources of collagen are poultry, bovine, milk, or fish. A total of about 28 different types of collagen have been identified, but we can focus on the 5 main types.

  1. Type I and Type III make up 90 % of the collagen. They’re densely packed in your skin, tendons, ligaments, bones, muscles, arteries. They also help provide structure and shape your organs, including your heart.
  2. Type II is mostly found in cartilage, essential for joint support.
  3. Type IV is found in layers of your skin.
  4. Type V is usually found in your cornea, some layers of the skin, hair and the placenta.
